The Aims of the Traditional Architecture Group

Traditional Architecture is a body of knowledge and design technique, created by the experience of our predecessors, and given to us as a guide. It is there for us to use and modify for our contemporary needs and to hand on, hopefully enriched, to our successors.

About the Traditional Architecture Group

The Traditional Architecture Group is a society linked with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). It is established to celebrate the highest achievements of the past as a living source for modern inspiration.

The group seeks to work within architectural, planning and educational disciplines to promote the value of a traditional approach in architecture and design. The group aims to provide a meeting point and a venue for the exchange of ideas for those individuals interested in or seeking the professional services of individuals and companies practising contemporary traditional architecture.

The elements of traditional architecture

Meaning

The understanding that buildings and towns are the products and the servants of human consciousness, intelligence and community The acceptance that, even in a deeply dislocated world, traditional architecture is an autonomous and immortal language

Continuity

The transmission and reception of knowledge as a cultural and educational inheritance...born of close observation and modified by continual adjustment The handing down, across the generations, of knowledge, skills and the sustainable techniques of the pragmatic art of building

Quality

The aspiration to excellence in a skilful and fluent synthesis of the arts with craftsmanship and the recognition that proven ways of building, appropriate use of materials and visual comfort are the basis of an experienced architectural order
